Here the Cinder Church burned the dead to feed the Ember Heart. The bones are piled to the ceiling, and the furnaces still smoulder after three hundred years.
Guardian: Sister Calyx of Cinders
The priestess who led the burning rites. She believed with all her heart that the flame was absolution and the only path to salvation.
Calyx entered the Church of the Flame as a child. At the first rite she led, the furnace flame scorched her face beyond recognition. She did not weep; she smiled and told everyone the fire had burned the sin from her face. From that day she wore a white porcelain mask with a crack down its middle, and no one ever saw the face beneath it again.
Vorath made her mistress of the pyres. Every body in the capital was brought to the ossuary so its ashes could feed the Ember Heart. Calyx swung a censer staff holding a coal from the Heart as she chanted, and burned tens of thousands with her own hands, until every finger was charred black.
When the city fell the furnaces never went out, and neither did Calyx stop. To her, the Ember-touched who rise from death are sinners the fire has not yet finished cleansing, and she will gladly burn them again and again until nothing is left but pure ash.
Come, Ashbound… let the flame cleanse you of your sins.Sister Calyx of Cinders
